Bound with the arms of Mitte de Chevrières [JOINVILLE (Jean de)] The History & Chronicle of the very chrestian king S. Loys IX du nom, & XLIIII, roi de France, roy de France, escrite par feu messire Ian Sire, seigneur de Jonville, seneschal de Champagne familier & contemporain dudit roy S. Loys. And now put in light by Antoine Pierre de Rieux. Poitiers, enseigne du Pélican [De Marnef frères au colophon], 1547. In-8 : 8f, CCXVIII, 6f. Light half-mark at the end of the volume. 17th century brown calf, spine ribbed, small iron between boxes, central gilt arms in medallion, illegible cold arms at foot, two series of triple fillets framing the boards, fleurs-de-lis in spandrels, cold fillet on spine, yellow edges. Nice copy. Edition made after a manuscript belonging to king René. De Rieux, the editor, did not fail to rejuvenate the text to the taste of the time. An abridgement of the life of St. Louis had appeared in 1530 and was reprinted in 1541 (Tchemerzine 6, 288). Provenance: From the library of Gabrielle de Gadagne, countess of Chevrières. Married to Jacques Mitte de Chevrières-Miolans, count of Saint-Chamond in 1601. Great bibliophile, she became famous by founding in 1628 in St. Chamond the convent of the Minimes and in Lyon the convent of the celestial Annonciades and the Small College. Died in 1635 (OHR 951).
