LA FONTAINE (Jean de) Selected Fables. New edition engraved in intaglio. Paris, the author, 1765-1775. 6 volumes in-8; text engraved by Montulay and Drouët, edition decorated with an allegorical frontispiece, 6 title-frontispieces, 243 out-of-text figures, as many head vignettes, and more than 200 endpapers, engraved by Fessard. Unidentified dry stamp with motto "Vieilens e Fidelis". Contemporary fawn glazed calf, decorated smooth spines, fawn title and endpapers, slightly rubbed headpieces, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges and inside, small restorations to some corners, gilt edges. A fine copy. One of the most beautiful editions of La Fontaine's Fables, undertaken by the engraver Étienne Fessard for which it took more than 10 years of work (Cohen 551).
