Red morocco of the time LA FONTAINE (Jean de) Contes et Nouvelles en vers. Amsterdam [Paris], se.[Barbou], 1762. 2 volumes in-8 : XIV, 1f, 268pp, 1f, 8pp (placement of the prints) / 1f, VIII, 1f, 306pp, 2f, 10-16 (continuation of the placement of the prints) ; illustrated with 2 engraved titles by VIDAL, engraved fleurons and cul-de-lampe, and 80 plates out of text by Eisen (including 2 frontispiece portraits of the author by RIGAULT and of Eisen by Vispré). All engravings in the "covered" state. Some spotting in places. Contemporary red morocco, spine ribbed and decorated, bronze endpapers, gilt garland framing the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt roulette inside, gilt edges. A very nice copy. Edition executed at the expense of the Fermiers Généraux, of a great quality of printing and with a remarkable illustration by Eisen. One of the undisputed masterpieces of the 18th century figure book. Provenance: Printed bookplate of the library of P. H. Mumm von Schwarzenstein.
