LA FONTAINE (Jean de) - [OUDRY] - Lot 607
LA FONTAINE (Jean de) - [OUDRY] Chosen Fables, set in verse. Illustrations by OUDRY. Paris, Desaint & Saillant ; Durand, 1755-59. 4 volumes in folio : XXX, XXXVIII, 124pp. / 2f., II, 135pp. / 2f., IV, 146pp. / 2f, II, 188pp; illustrated with a portrait of the author after L'Argillière engraved by Tardieu (present although not part of the edition), without the frontispiece, 275 plates out of text by Oudry engraved by the best engravers of the time and 203 beautiful woodcut cul-de-lampe with floral or allegorical motifs after Bachelier engraved by Lesueur and Papillon. Minor spotting in places, a few leaves slightly browned, a small paper tear without missing on a leaf of the warning. Contemporary porphyry calf, spine ribbed and ornamented, headpieces wiped, red title and endpapers, triple gilt fillet framing the boards with fleurons in the corners, gilt roulette on the edges, gilt edges. Title page of volume IV detached (present however). The most beautiful illustrated edition of the 18th century of La Fontaine, here in second printing (the banner is with the words "Le Léopard" in the figure of the fable "Le Singe et le Léopard" (Volume III, pp. 113)). The brilliance with which Cochin adapted Oudry's drawings makes this work one of the most remarkable illustrated books of the 17th century. Bound in contemporary porphyry. The typographical part was entrusted to Charles-Antoine Jombert (Tchemerzine III, 874-875). Provenance: from the library of the Vicomte de Frédy, with his printed bookplate.
