Curiosa [LANCELIN de LAVAL] Wonderful and gallant antecedents of Mohammed, prophet of the Muslims. Secret history. Mecca, se., 1761. In-12, engraved title. Contemporary marbled fawn calf, smooth spine decorated, red title-piece, headband damaged, gilt "GL" in the center of the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, red speckled edges. Rare 1761 reprint of the original edition ("Histoire secrette du prophète des turcs" published in 1754) of Lancelin de Laval's accounts of the private life and loves of Muhammad. One of the least known texts of French oriental literature of the 18th century (Not listed in the general catalog of the BnF; not in Barbier, nor in Brunet). Published anonymously, but attributed to Lancelin de Laval, the 18th-century French author of gallant romances, including Les amours de Mahomet. The author is also known to have published "Les amours de Mahomet" (1750).
