LORRIS (Guillaume de) - MEUNG (Jean de) The Roman de la Rose. Edition made on that of Lenglet Dufresnoy and enriched with the dissertation on the authors of the work Paris, Fournier et fils ; Didot, year VII (1799). 5 volumes in-8; 4 plates of which 3 in frontispieces. A fine untrimmed copy, with all margins, on large paper. Contemporary Bradel paper covered with red maroquined paper, title and gilt fillets on the spine, small paper tears, small bumps on the edges and on some of the headpieces. The best edition of the Roman de la Rose established by Méon who will keep, for the fourth volume, an anthology of alchemical texts difficult to access at the time. "The Roman de la Rose, which flourished in the Middle Ages, is a treatise on alchemy of deep symbolism; it is said in the preface that "the author was strongly inclined towards the chemistry of the Great Work or the transmutation of metals.
