Attached by the same author : Apologie des Lettres Provinciales de Louis de Montalte ; contre la dernière réponse des PP. Jesuits, entitled Entretiens de Cléandre et de Eudoxe. Delft and Rouen, Van Rhin, 1693. 3 volumes in-12 : XXIV, 334pp, 2f. / VIII, 336pp, 2f. / 10f., 336pp, 2f. Contemporary brown granite calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title-pieces, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges; tan basane for the third volume, spine ribbed and decorated, headbands faded, rubbing and dull corners. Provenance: Ex-libris printed Bibliothèque de Mr de Barante. Interesting quadrilingual edition. The Provinciales, are a set of eighteen fictitious letters, written by Blaise Pascal. Published between January 1656 and March 1657, they first aimed at defending the Jansenist theologian Antoine Arnauld, threatened to be condemned by the Sorbonne, before turning to a criticism of the Society of Jesus.
