Text ruled, folio 283 torn without missing, soiling on one folio, paper strip added to the margin of the last folio, copy slightly short of margin. 18th century speckled tan calf, spine ribbed and decorated, small accidents to the headpieces, red title-pieces, green tomaisons, triple cold fillet framing the boards, double gilt fillet on the edges, blue edges. First edition, the best and most beautiful and sought-after of Plutarch's works, with the French translation by Jacques Amyot, humanist and French prelate (this famous translation of Plutarch's Lives is his most important work). One of the masterpieces of the 16th century printing.
