RAEMOND (Florimond de RAYMOND or de) - Lot 704
RAEMOND (Florimond de RAYMOND or de) The Anti-Christ and the Anti-Papesse. Paris, L'Angelier, 1599. In-4: 14f, 485f, 17f; full page portrait of King Henry III. Contemporary brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title-piece, headpieces torn off, spine ends cracked, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges. Florimond de Raemond, friend of Montaigne and Blaise de Monluc, embraced the Reformation at a very young age before suddenly changing sides; he published pamphlets of extreme violence against the Huguenots. L'Anti-Christ is both a controversial text against the Protestants and an in-depth work on the question of the antichrist. The Anti-Papesse refutes the legend maintained by the Protestants according to which a woman disguised as a man would have been elected on the pontifical throne in the ninth century and that she would have given birth in public at St John Lateran.
