[SAINT-JOHN CRÈVE COEUR (Michel Guillaume Jean CRÈVECOEUR di - Lot 729
[SAINT-JOHN CRÈVE COEUR (Michel Guillaume Jean CRÈVECOEUR dit)] Letters of an American Farmer addressed to W...m S...on (William Setton) from the year 1770 to 1786, trans. Paris, Cuchet, 1787. 2 volumes in-8. ½ fawn pastiche basane, ornate smooth spines. Untrimmed copy. First French edition, anonymous but by the author himself. "This work contains interesting articles on Washington, Franklin, La Fayette, on the customs of the Americans, the War of Independence, a quantity of curious anecdotes on the characters who played a role in this war". Crèvecoeur not only translated the London edition, he substantially rewrote it, adding a second volume and changing the identity of the farmer's narrator, "James," to a more easily identifiable person as Crèvecoeur himself. It also has a more pro-American and anti-British tone than the London imprint. This work describes his experiences in America and a colonial world sliding into the chaos of war and revolution. This Norman colonist spent 24 years in North America. He published in 1801 "Voyage dans la haute Pennsylvanie". See also Filson and his history of Kentucky presented as a sequel to these letters (Chadenat 1479)(Barbier II 1237)(Sabin 17495). Provenance: Printed bookplate Gabriel Laplagne Barris, member of the Société Archéologique du Gers.
