Eggplant morocco signed Dewatines - Lot 761
Eggplant morocco signed Dewatines [VERSTEGAN (Richard)] Théâtre des Cruautez des Héréticques de nostre temps, translated from Latin into French. Antwerp, Hubert, 1607. In-4: 95pp, 32f (Particular description of the cruelties and inhumanities of the schismatics of England); illustrated with 29 mid-page figures depicting torture and torments. 19th century eggplant morocco signed DEWATINES, spine decorated with nerfs, large garland and 21 double gilt fillets framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges and inside, gilt edges. Second enlarged French edition (more sought after than the original in Latin of 1587 by the same publisher). Rare baroque catalog of tortures, emblematic of the propaganda by image at the time of the wars of religion, sought after for its figures of particularly cruel tortures and torments perpetrated by the enemies of Catholicism throughout Europe. The last engraving shows the beheading of Mary Stuart. The text accompanying the iconography is an enumeration of the tortures and exactions in various European provinces, cities and countries (England, France and the Netherlands). A second part entitled "Particulière description des cruautez et inhumanitez des schismatiques d'Angleterre, du règne de Henry huictième" is bound afterwards. It is preceded by a long prologue denouncing the cruelties committed by the enemies of the Catholic faith (Brunet V, 774).
