Constantinople [VILLEHARDOUIN (GEOFFROI de) - Du CANGE (Charles du FRESNE)] Observations on the history of Geoffroy de Ville-Hardouin, mareschal of Champagne, and of Romania. Together his Praise & Genealogy of the House of Ville-Hardouin (Followed by) History of the Empire of Constantinople under the French Emperors Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1657. In folio, numbered 234-370pp. 4f. (table) - 5f. 331pp. illustrated with 2 folding maps (of Greece and Turkey of Europe) - 86pp. (collection of several charters... to serve the History of the Franciscans, who held the Empire of Constantinople). To note, numerous blue paper leaves at the beginning of the volume, a part of curious bawdy notes handwritten in black ink (at the beginning "My amorous adventures" - then some daubs - to finish by short accounts of amorous conquests with the first names of the conquered girls). Basane fawn pastiche XIXe, spine with decorated nerves, brown titles, gilded arms in the centers of the plates, triple gilded fillet framing the plates, double gilded fillet on the edges, fine gilded garland inside, red edges. Spellings and rubbing. First edition published by Charles du Fresne du Cange. The first part contains the Chronicle of Villehardouin (original text and translation), the Chronicle of Mouskes and notes. The second part, the work of Du Cange, contains the "Histoire générale de ce que les Francois et les Latins ont fait de plus mémorable" following the Histoire de la conquête de Ville-Hardouin, with in appendix, a Recueil de chartes et autres pièces justificatives. Part of the first part devoted to Ville-Hardouin is missing (the first 240 pages). Provenance: Coat of arms to be determined.
