Red leather of the time VIRGIL The works translated into French, the text opposite the translation. Decorated with intaglio figures, with remarks, by the abbot of Fontaines. Paris, Quillau, 1743. 4 volumes in-8; illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of des Fontaines, 18 plates out of text, all by Cochin fils and a portrait of Constantin Mavrocordato, dedicatee of the work. A copy with good margins. Contemporary red morocco, spine ribbed and decorated, green title and endpapers, triple fillet framing the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt roulette inside, gilt edges. A very fine copy. First edition of the translation by the abbot Desfontaines preceded by a "Discourse" of the abbot on the translation of the poets in general, and on each work of Virgil in particular; they deal in particular with style, narration, invention. The Pastorals (vol.1) and the Aeneid (vol. II, III and IV) are also preceded by a summary of the subject. The work closes on a "Life of Virgil". Desfontaines is considered as one of the founders of the new literary criticism and journalism.
