Netherlands - Netherlands [WICQUEFORT (Abraham de)] Faithful advice to the true Dutchmen concerning all that happened in the villages of Bodegrave & Swammerdam, & the useless cruelties that the French have exercised. With a report of the last march of the Army of the King of France in Brabant & Flanders. Slne, 1673. In-4: 1f., 202pp. illustrated with 8 folding plates by Romeyn de Hooghe in first printing. ½ brown pastiche calf with corners, red title-piece, small diamond-shaped irons between boxes. First edition of this description of the atrocities committed by the French troops during the retreat from Holland of the army of the Duke of Luxembourg at the end of 1672, forced to leave Holland by the thaw after a victorious march to the Hague. The work is particularly sought after for the ten admirable etchings by Romeyn de Hooghe with which it is decorated, showing on eight double-page plates the massacres and pillaging perpetrated by the French soldiers. The proofs are here from the first edition, before the numbers (Brunet I, 589).
