Memoirs by Nicolas Dupré de saint-Maur, intendant of Guyenne, to whom the city of Bordeaux owes many urban developments including the layout of the city's ring canal which was to drain the marshes and ensure the flow of "harmful waters", the nurseries of its botanical garden or its "Grand Théâtre" and its lapidary museum (1783), and was also the architect of the leveling of the Trompette castle. Under the impetus of his great stewards of the 18th century, the city was given a new face and abandoned its medieval layout. The author was also concerned with the local economy, the harvesting and sale of Landes resin, proposed the recovery of the ports of Bayonne and Saint-Jean-de-Luz by declaring them free zones and also advocated the cultivation of tobacco. However, his nomination in Bordeaux was not a sinecure because he was constantly refused by the Parliament of Bordeaux and the States of Guyenne, but he still managed to impose some of his creations. The bourgeoisie and the magistracy were united against him. He finally left Bordeaux in 1786 and was appointed State Counselor in Paris.
