Basque language LABASTIDE (Mathieu CHINIAC, de) Dissertation on the Basques (false title). [in Commentaries of Caesar... accompanied by Dissertations and Notes. Part Two containing the Dissertations]. Paris, Monory, Veuve Poilly, L'Esclapart, s.d. [1786]. In-8: 1f. (lacking the title page), VIII, 502pp. 1f. ½ tan basane, red title-piece and gilt fillets on smooth spine, boards rubbed, leather missing on one of the boards. Rare work. In the entrance warning: "... treats a new and extremely piquant subject. It has for object the Basques, a singular people who, being part of France, seem nevertheless to be in some way separated from the rest of this beautiful empire, by their customs and by their language. Placed in a corner of Aquitaine, at the foot of the Pyrenees, they have preserved the customs that were peculiar to them, the language that they spoke in times that date back to the highest antiquity. This language is a remnant of that of the Phoenicians: the Basques are one of their colonies". Curious book by the research which it contains, but diffuse and full of systematic ideas. (Barbe 128).
