Pyreneanism - Lot 190
Pyreneanism SAMAZEUILH (Jean-François) Journey from Bayonne to Eaux-Bonnes and Eaux-Chaudes through Basse-Navarre and Soule. Bayonne, Lamaignère, 1858. In-12 : 244pp. Printed bookplate. 1/2 green chagrin of the time, title and gilded nets on smooth back. Contains among other things a quick nomenclature of the Ascensions of Ossau and the text of the (very rare) relation of the Ascension of Claude Venat in 1818. Half of the text concerns the Basque Country. Born in Casteljaloux in 1790, after studying law in Toulouse, Samazeuilh settled in Nérac in 1816 as a lawyer. He took time out from his professional life to travel, mainly for historical reasons, studying the past "with an ardor, a zeal, an untiring perseverance", crisscrossing his department and all the surrounding territories which led him to the Pyrenees, a favorite territory to which he devoted several works, from the foothills to the peaks. (Beard 835) (Bilbao VII, 379).
