Japan FERRAND (Claudius) Fables and legends of Japan. First series (only published). Tokyo, imp. Yao; Hongo Motomachi; Paris, Abbé Ferrand, 1901. In-8, 13 texts on fine Japon paper, text framed with a black frieze, black illustrations in the text. 3 color illustrations out of text, plus the publisher's cover preserved. Blue printed paper with embossed geometric decoration, white title vignette on first board, bound in Japanese style. Uncommon first edition. 13 illustrated fables and captions. The engravings of the last story represent the various trades of Japan: gheta maker, cooper, umbrella maker, carpenter, mat maker. First series only published.
