Autograph letter from the author on the title page (dated 1859). Contemporary red chagrin signed GRUEL, gilt title on spine, cold fillet à la Duseuil framing the central gilt arms of Francisco de Asís, Duke of Cádiz, slight rubbing, double gilt fillet on edges, inner garland, gilt edges. Francisco de Asís, Duke of Cadiz (1822-1902), king of Spain as husband of Queen Isabella II of Spain from their marriage on October 10, 1846 until Isabella was overthrown on September 30, 1868. The royal couple had twelve children, including King Alfonso XII. Following the accession of his son, Francisco became king father. Family Francisco de Asís was born in Aranjuez, the second son of the infant Francisco de Paula of Spain and his wife Princess Luisa Carlotta of the Two Sicilies. He was named after Saint Francis of Assisi. Francisco married Queen Isabella II of Spain, his double first cousin, in 1846. Twelve children were born during the marriage. From 1864, Francisco de Asís acted as president of the Spanish Privy Council (Consejo del Reino). In 1868, Francisco went into exile with his wife in France and adopted the incognito title of Count of Moratalla. On June 25, 1870, Isabel abdicated in favor of their son Alfonso XII.
