Uruguay - Photography [PHOTOGRAPHS - MONTEVIDEO] Recuerdo de Montevideo [Memory of Montevideo]. Galli & Cie, 1875. In-4 oblong: a presentation page, a map of Uruguay in color, a map of Montevideo in color and 32 photographic plates in photoglyphics framed with a frieze and red captions, all protected under serpents, pasted on soft boards and all mounted on tabs. Publisher's purple percale, numerous depigmentation, title and coat of arms of the city gilded on the upper board, cold arabesques framing the boards. Very rare album of the period of views of buildings, streets, boat in hold, fruit market, fort of Cerro, animated views. In 1875, Galli y Cia published the album of views entitled Recuerdos de Montevideo using a process called woodburytype or photoglyptic (optomechanical process of reproduction and printing of photographic images invented by the British Walter Bentley Woodbury in 1864; it is a photomechanical printing process in which a gelatin relief pattern is hardened and pressed against a metal plate, producing an intaglio). This technique required manual inking and needed a special quality of paper, as well as the use of a separate press to print the image. It was a slow and expensive process, justifiable in the edition of albums or institutional publications.
