Cartography - Navy [FADEN (William)] Le Petit Neptune Français: or French coasting Pilot, for the coasts of Flanders, Channel, Bay of Biscay, and Mediterranean. London, Faden, 1793. In-4: XVI, 147pp, 4f; illustrated with a frontispiece (phared e Cordouan) and 42 folding plates out of text.Passages of worms in the outer margin of a few leaves of text in fine. ½ tan calf with corners, gilt title on smooth spine, red head. First edition of Faden's adaptation of the most famous piloting manual "Le petit flambeau de la mer" after Jeffrey's "Petit Neptune François" of 1661. The work is a real memento for the seafarer with the hours of the tides, the currents, the depths, the quality of the bottom, the present dangers. In addition to the detailed description of the coasts of the countries and islands indicated by the title, this work contains a "Description of the principal ports and bays where the ships touch, both to and from the East Indies, with a table of the variations encountered during this voyage". The work was published in response to the revolutionary upheavals in France. Most of the maps are newly engraved, with the imprint of Faden, successor of Thomas Jefferys' company.
