Louis-Joseph Watteau, known as Watteau of Lille (Valencienne - Lot 36
Louis-Joseph Watteau, known as Watteau of Lille (Valenciennes, 1731-Lille, 1798) Saint John the Baptist Oil on canvas (lined) 55 x 60 cm Signed and dated 17.9 (Slightly repainted) Son of a roofer from Valenciennes, Louis Watteau was the nephew of Antoine Watteau, the painter of the fêtes galantes, but he did not know his uncle. He and his son François - one of his twelve children - received the name "Watteau de Lille". Louis Watteau, in fact, spent most of his career in this city where he became a professor at the school of drawing, a member of the Academy of Arts, and whose museum he helped found by saving works during the Revolution. One of the main artists of the Lille region in the 18th century, Louis Watteau specialized in military and religious painting.
