TWO PLATES OF ENAMELLED COPPER OVOIDS WEDDING CHAPLAINS - Lot 40
TWO PLATES OF ENAMELLED COPPER OVOIDS WEDDING CHAPLAINS decorated with painted portraits of a gentleman and a lady of quality on blue backgrounds, the top with floral decoration, French work of the second half of the eighteenth century in the taste of Jean-Baptise II Nouailher, length 8.5 cm. Enamelled plate, draft of an identical gentleman's portrait, is attached. Accidents to the enamel, small hair. These purses, known as wedding purses, were used to hold the gold coins that the husband offered to his wife. Most often, they were enriched with embroidery or enamel representing the portrait of the two engaged couples. These plates are to be compared with the work of Jean-Baptiste II NOUAILHER, an artist from Limousin who came from a dynasty of enamellers known since the 16th century. Not reproduced in the catalog
