Andrea BOSCOLI (Florence, ca. 1560-Rome, 1607) - Lot 136
Andrea BOSCOLI (Florence, ca. 1560-Rome, 1607) Academy of a man seen from behind brandishing a sword Black stone on beige paper. 29.6 x 16 cm. Stamp of the collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) SRIR lower left (Frits Lugt, L.3016a). The collection mark stamped in the lower left of our drawing links the work to the collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). The English artist assembled a large collection of paintings and drawings, some of which came from his successful trip to Italy. These included works by Fra Bartolommeo, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and many other Italian masters of the 16th century, including Andrea Boscoli. The Fondation Custodia's Frits Lugt database also reports that the Reynolds collection was marked by the executors on the front of the sheets for the best drawings, while drawings considered inferior were marked on the back. Andrea Boscoli was a history painter and portraitist. A student of the Mannerist master Santi di Tito (1536-1603), with whom his works were sometimes confused, the young Boscoli began his career in Rome, where he executed numerous drawings after ancient statuary and presented figures with powerful musculatures, echoing the genius of Michelangelo. Our drawing was probably executed executed during this period. Upon his return to his native Florence in 1587, his talent was recognized and he received important commissions for frescoes in numerous churches. Lot presented by Mr. Alexis Bordes, expert in ancient drawings.
