William de LEFTWICH-DODGE (1867-1935) Springtime Oil on canvas, signed lower right and dated 98. 113 x 87 cm. (Sinkage and cracks, loose canvas, dirty). Original painting used as a cover for the issue n°98 of Figaro Illustré, in May 1898. (A bound copy will be given to the buyer). Provenance: Important Bordeaux collection around the Art Nouveau. William de Leftwich Dodge is an American painter, born in 1867 in Bedford (Virginia), his family moved to Europe when he was twelve years old. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme, where he obtained the Prix d'Atelier. Known for his mural compositions, done mainly in the United States for public and private buildings, such as the northwest pavilion of the Library of Congress in Washington in 1895, he was also a very fashionable portrait painter.
