eighteenth century english school - Lot 23
eighteenth century english school Portrait of Robert Hampden-Trevor, First Viscount Hampden (1706-1783) Canvas. 138 x 106 cm. (Framed). Inscribed lower left: "Robert - Visc Hampden - Ae° suae 70" (Robert, Viscount Hampden, at the age of 70 - which dates the portrait to 1776) In an original gilt frame. This portrait is of an important person. The eldest son of the second marriage of Thomas Trevor, the first Baron Trevor, Robert initially pursued a career as a diplomat. Sent to the United Provinces as secretary to Horace Walpole, he succeeded Walpole as head of the embassy and subsequently maintained a correspondence with Walpole. In 1759 he was appointed Postmaster General. In the meantime he had inherited the property of his relative John Hampden and received the title of Baron Trevor on the death of his brother, Bishop of Durham. In 1776 he was created Viscount Hampden of Great and Little Hampden in the county of Buckingham. Robert also wrote Latin poems which were published under the title Poemata Hampdeniana. Another portrait of him, by Thomas Gainsborough, confirms the identity of our model.
