François SIMONAU (Bornhem, Belgium, 1783 - London, 1859) - Lot 39
François SIMONAU (Bornhem, Belgium, 1783 - London, 1859) The Flemish Murillo Portrait of a lady wearing lace and roses. Oil on canvas. 68 x 57 cm Signed upper right and dated 1824. (Two restored accidents and wear on the dress). Gilded frame "with canals" in the 19th century style. Trained in Bruges, Simonau then went to Paris where he worked with Baron Gros. In 1812, he returned to Belgium, but three years later moved to London where he received the protection of Sir Thomas Lawrence. Our painting shows the free and broad technique he borrowed from Gainsborough or Lawrence. But he was probably also inspired by the Spanish painting of the Golden Age, that of Velázquez or Murillo, for the English nicknamed him the "Flemish Murillo". From 1815 to 1859, he enjoyed a certain success and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and the British Institute. But he died in poverty.
