Representation of a colonial trading post.
Canvas.
43 x 56 cm.
(Restorations, lined around 1900).
Louis XVI period gilt frame with pearls and rais-de-coeur.
Early depictions of trading posts are rare, but this one of a colonial trading post is even rarer. Overlooking the hustle and bustle of this store, we can make out, hanging from the ceiling joists, what appear to be turtle shells and, above all, a crocodile carcass. Although it's not easy to identify the location, it's likely to have been in the West Indies or New Orleans.
