Born in 1906 in the village of Rho-Na, Kien An province. After secondary school at the Lycée Français, Mai Trung Thu entered the Hanoi School of Fine Arts from 1925 to 1930. During his teaching career, he asked to be sent to France for the 1937 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts.
Mai Thrung Thu's main technique is painting on silk. The lines are strong and firm, the colors and tones subtle and soft. These works often illustrate the life of Indochina's upper classes.
Together with his friend Le Pho, they are the most famous representatives of the first generation of modern Vietnamese artists.
