DELAMARE (Nicolas)
Traité de la Police où l'on trouvera l'Histoire de son établissement, les fonctions et les prérogatives de ses magistrats, toutes les lois et tous les règlements qui la concernent. Paris, Brunet, 1719-38.
4 volumes in folio; 2 folding plans in volume IV, the 8 plans in volume 1 are missing. Triple cold-stamped fillet framing the boards, rubbing and wear from use, rubbed gilt roulette on the edges, blue speckled edges.
Contemporary speckled glazed fawn calf, red title-pieces and tomaisons on ribbed spines, headpieces scuffed, torn or clumsily repaired or glued, 5 jaws split at head or foot entries,
Nicolas Delamare did not write a simple collection of ordinances, as he had intended to do, but an ongoing history of all police laws and regulations, from the earliest times to 1720.
This Traité de la Police is a monument to the erudition and history of legislation.
The fourth volume was published posthumously by Lecler du Brillet.
Laws and regulations relating to religion, morality, health and the history of the Police are the main themes of the first three volumes, while the fourth and last deals with buildings, public roads and the police de la voirie.
