NOGARET (Jean-Louis de, Duc d'Épernon) Histoire de la vie du Duc d'Espernon. Paris, Courbe, 1655. 3 parts in one volume in folio, frontispiece portrait. Contemporary grained fawn calf, ribbed spine decorated with fleurons, restored headpieces, double gilt fillet framing the boards, restored corners and edges, red edges. First edition. This French soldier and statesman was one of the most important figures in the reigns of Henri III, Henri IV and Louis XIII. Present at Henri IV's side at the time of his assassination, he helped to have Marie de Médicis proclaimed regent; he was suspected of having ordered the assassination. The duke was held responsible by Richelieu for the Spanish defeat at Fontarabie. Also included: MEZERAY (François Études de) Abrégé chronologique ou extrait de l'histoire de France.
