SAVARY (Jacques)
Paris, Bleuet, 1798.
4 volumes in-8; illustrated with maps and 2 plates, all folding. Slight wetness in the first volume, heavier in volume II.
Contemporary fawn shagreened basane, ornate smooth spines, red titles and endpapers, small leather tears on spines, epidermis, cold fillet framing the covers.
Second edition of this interesting work by one of the pioneers of Egyptology. An epistolary account with pre-romantic overtones.
A great admirer of Rousseau and a connoisseur of classical literature, his account is peppered with literary references to justify his observations of the Egyptians, particularly the inhabitants of the Delta. His descriptions are so precise that Napoleon took the time to study them in preparation for his Egyptian expedition.
