Autograph - Lot 236
Autograph HENRI IV - LAISSEZ PASSER - 1594 Laissez-passer dated 1594, issued in the name of Sieur de Machero to allow him to send his servants with arms and horses to Burgundy for the King's service By the King Potier (Louis Potier de Gesvres, Secretary of State). A year later, on June 5, 1595 at Fontaine-Française, Henri IV defeated the League army led by Charles de Mayenne and the Spanish troops of Juan Fernandez de Velasco. Document size 33x22 cm, dry stamp and signature. Excellent condition. When Henri IV succeeded Henri III, the Catholics of the League refused to recognize his legitimacy. He laid siege to the capital in 1590, but had to lift the siege as the Duke of Mayenne (House of Guise) and the Duke of Parma (in the service of the King of Spain) approached. The King abjured Protestantism and converted to Christianity on July 25, 1593 in the Basilica of Saint-Denis.
