Diploma appointing Clément Leffray to the rank of Lieutenant in the Armée Royale by Marie Caroline, Duchesse de Berry, in recognition of his services during the Vendée Legitimist uprising of May and June 1832.
Parchment dated March 25, 1836, in Gratz (the Duchess's place of exile), signed by herself and General Baron Clouet, commander of the right bank of the Loire.
Parchment, 35x30 cm, printed royal arms and coats of arms, central archival folds.
The royalist insurrection in western France in 1832, also known as the Fifth Vendée War and the Fifth Chouannerie, was a legitimist uprising launched by the Duchess of Berry to overthrow the July Monarchy.
The insurrection affected Brittany, Maine, Anjou and Poitou, and in particular the south and east of Loire-Inférieure, as well as parts of southeastern Ille-et-Vilaine and northern Vendée. It quickly failed, however, due to the low level of local mobilization.
