VIGNY (Alfred de) - Lot 256
VIGNY (Alfred de) Autograph letter signed, no place given, dated September 24, 1836, in which he thanks his correspondent for sending a work that he will "read with fervent attention." One ½ page in-8, signed and dated September 24, 1836. Alfred Victor de Vigny, or comte de Vigny, was a French writer, novelist, playwright and poet. An influential figure in Romanticism, he published his first poems in 1822 and contributed to the development of the French historical novel. His work is characterized by a fundamental pessimism, and a disenchanted vision of society. His poetry is imbued with a haughty stoicism, heralding the poetic modernity of Baudelaire, Verlaine and Mallarmé. In 1845, he was elected to the Académie Française on his fifth attempt. He died of stomach cancer in 1863 after a slow agony.
