Travel HAWKESWORTH (John) - [COOK (James)] Relation des voyages entrepris par ordre de sa Majeste britannique, actuellement regnante, pour faire des Decouvertes dans l'Hemisphere Meridional, et successivement executes par le Commodore Byron, le Capitaine Carteret, le Capitaine Wallis et le Capitaine Cook dans les vaisseaux Le Dauphin, Le Swallow et L'Endeavour Paris, Saillant & Nyon ; Panckoucke, 1774. 4 volumes in-4; illustrated with 52 (16/16/17/3) engraved plates (including maps) by Benard and R. de Launay, mostly folding. Contents in good condition. Contemporary marbled fawn calf, very rubbed, spine ribbed and decorated, red titles and endpapers, 5 damaged headpieces, small leather tears and spotting, marbled edges. Used condition. First French edition of this collection of four voyages to the Pacific. Volume I contains the voyages of Byron (Rio de Janeiro-Batavia) and Carteret (northwestern Canada-Indonesia-Sulawesi), the first part of volume II that of Wallis (Patagonia, Tahiti-Batavia), the remainder being devoted to James Cook's first voyage on the ship Endeavor from 1768 to 1771 (New Zealand, Australia...)(Sabin 30940).
