KOSTER (Henri)
Voyages dans la partie septentrionale du Brésil, depuis 1809, jusqu'en 1815, comprenant les provinces de Pernambuco (Fernambouc), Seara, Paraïba, Maragnan, etc., translated by A. Jay. Paris, Delaunay, 1818.
2 volumes in-8; illustrated with a fold-out plan (plan of the port of Pernambuco), 8 color plates (costumes, views, genre scenes), and a fold-out map. Beautiful, fresh color plates, protected by serpents.
Contemporary blue Bradel paper boards, gilt title, tomaisons and fillets, yellow edges.
Rare first edition of the French translation.
For health reasons, Henry Koster (1793-1820), a British subject, set sail for Brazil in 1809, where he made excursions into the interior of the country and into provinces less frequented by Europeans. His report is one of the best ever published on this country.
