½ marbled pastiche fawn calf, ornate ribbed spines, brown title-pieces and tomaisons; red heads.
First edition. Loureiro (1717-1791), a Portuguese Jesuit missionary, established and described many new genera and plants on the flora of southern Indochina and Vietnam.
He was not a professional botanist, but had acquired good botanical knowledge and compiled a good herbarium of around 1,000 species.
One of the most important contributions to the flora of eastern Southeast Asia and southern China.
