China - Cochinchina LOUREIRO (João de) Flora Cochinchinensis : sistens plantas in regno Cochinchina nascentes. quibus accedunt aliae observatae in Sinensi Imperio, Africa Orientali, Indiae... Ulyssipone (Lisbon), typis academicis, 1790. 2 volumes in-4. ½ marbled pastiche fawn calf, ornate ribbed spines, brown title-pieces and tomaisons; red heads. First edition. Loureiro (1717-1791), a Portuguese Jesuit missionary, established and described many new genera and plants on the flora of southern Indochina and Vietnam. He was not a professional botanist, but had acquired good botanical knowledge and compiled a good herbarium of around 1,000 species. One of the most important contributions to the flora of eastern Southeast Asia and southern China.
