4 volumes in-8: illustrated with a frontispiece portrait engraved by Née after Notté, and 28 plates hors texte (including 5 fold-outs and one double-page spread), some botanical (8/8/4/8).
Contemporary fawn roots calf, ornate smooth spines, red and black title-pieces with small red mosaic medallion for the tomaisons, fine gilt garland framing the boards, gilt roulettes on the edges and inside, gilt edges. A good copy.
First edition of the French translation in in-8 format.
Thunberg, a brilliant botanist and student of Linné, embarked in 1771 on a vessel of the Compagnie des Indes. After a three-year stay in Cape Town, he visited Java, Japan and Ceylon.
