CLIFTON PARIS (Thomas) Letters from the Pyrenees during three months' pedestrian wanderings amidst the wildest scenes of the French and Spanish mountains, in the summer of 1842. London, Murray, 1843. In-8: XVI, 316pp; frontispiece, woodcut illustrations in text. Contemporary blond calf, ornate ribbed spine, red title page, black author's page, double gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges, marbled edges. Very fine copy, English binding. Beautifully illustrated. Mainly concerns the French and Spanish Pyrenees from St Jean de Luz to Cauterets. According to DULOUM: "the Historian of Pyreneanism (BERALDI) had not seen the audacity of his Aragonese people, and consequently, their importance in the history of the discovery of the chain". (Labarère 401) Provenance: Printed bookplate John Sheepshank 1852.
