Cagots FAY (Henri Marcel) History of Leprosy... - Lot 337 - Briscadieu
Cagots FAY (Henri Marcel) History of Leprosy in France. Lepers and Cagots of the Southwest. Historical, medical and philological notes followed by documents. With a preface by Professor Gilbert BALLET. Paris, Champion, 1910. Fort in-8: XXVI, 784pp; 14 plates and one fold-out map out of text, illustrations in text. ½ brown chagrin with corners, gilt title and gilt fillets on spine, beige cover printed in red and black preserved. The most important study of this population group, which has always been excluded from society. The most complete edition, the first, much more succinct, was published by Coulommiers, Brodard, 1907 under the title: "La Lèpre dans le sud-ouest - Les Cagots" (XV, 107pp.). This work is not the only one on a subject that has always interested researchers. It was preceded by Francisque MICHEL's "Histoire des Races Maudites de la France et de l'Espagne" in 1847, Eugène CORDIER's "Les cagots des Pyrénées" in 1866, Victor de ROCHAS's "Les Parias de France et d'Espagne" in 1876, but it was PALASSOU who first published a study of this kind in 1815: "Mémoire sur la constitution physique des Cagots". Elements are also to be found in the writings of VINSON, HOVELAQUE, BASCLE de LAGRÈZE, FOIX and others.
