Dr Sarramon's copy on blue paper
FOURCASSIÉ (Jean)
Romanticism and the Pyrenees. Paris, Gallimard, 1940.
In-8: 4f., 440pp. illustrated with a frontispiece and 10 photographic plates reproducing prints and lithographs. Printed on blue paper. Author's autograph letter to Dr. Saramon (April 1940), with a photograph also dedicated to Dr. Sarramon (1937).
½ dark blue chagrin with corners, gilt title on spine, publisher's cover printed in red and black retained. A good copy.
First edition. This work also exists with the title and cover on the letterhead of "Université de Paris" under the title "Le Romantisme et les Pyrénées. Thèse pour le Doctorat ès lettres présentée à la Faculté des Lettres de l'Université de Paris" also published by Gallimard.
A fundamental and highly readable anthology that lists many of the fine prose writers and petty writers who haunted our mountains (especially the valleys). The criticism is sometimes harsh, but always objective. It's the "Hundred Years" of literature, almost a complement to BERALDI's Pyrenean fresco. Once read, it's hardly surprising that a publisher like Gallimard should be interested in this important study (printed by Privat in Toulouse)(Labarère 596).
