FROSSARD (Emilien Benoît Daniel) pastor - Lot 354
FROSSARD (Emilien Benoît Daniel) pastor A picturesque view of the French Pyrenees. Lavédan, Bagnères and Gavarnie valleys. Paris, J.J. Risler (Nîmes, typ. Durand-Belle), 1839. In-4: 2f., VI, 38pp. 2f. 5 plates hors texte (a black & white diagram, a colored map, 3 colored landscapes), 19 vignettes in the text on chine mounted, 16 of which enhanced with watercolors in sepia colors at the time, all lithographed in pen. Dull black chagrin cloth. A good copy in a superb state of interior freshness. A very rare work, much sought-after for its superb vignettes, which make it one of the finest works on the Pyrenees. Most of these small-format vignettes are lithographed with a light, rare line, with the colorist doing most of the work. This album, also known as "Petit Frossard", is available with the vignettes in sepia color or without color at all, each as rare as the next. Émilien himself watercolored the vignettes as orders came in.
