MARCELLUS (Louis Marie Auguste DEMARTIN du... - Lot 433 - Briscadieu
MARCELLUS (Louis Marie Auguste DEMARTIN du TYRAC de) count Voyage dans les Hautes Pyrénées. Paris, Firmin-Didot, 1826. In 12: 5f., IV (table), 166pp. Contemporary fawn speckled basane, ornate smooth spine, bronze title-piece, gilt roulette framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges, marbled edges. A fine copy. Uncommon work. Bergons, Pic du Midi, plains and valleys in a romantic blend of prose and verse. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he does not borrow choice pieces from our great poets, but distills his own muse. This Marmand politician was born at Château de Marcellus in 1776, and died there in 1841. Elected deputy for the Gironde department, he was a fervent royalist. In addition to his political speeches, his works include odes, cantatas, idylls and epistles, all of which are uncommon.
