[MAURICE (Ch.)] Souvenirs of the Pyrenees.... - Lot 439 - Briscadieu
[MAURICE (Ch.)] Souvenirs of the Pyrenees. Bagnères, Dulon, s.d. (circa 1850). In-12: 25 plates of costumes, 9x14 cm, lithographed on a tinted background and enhanced in color at the time, gummed, pasted on flexible cardboard sheets mounted on tabs, some minor foxing on the backing pages. Black percale, gilded title on upper board with rocaille-style cold decoration. This anonymous album is known as "Petit Maurice". The delightful costumes remain very fresh in color. M. GASTON does not mention it, Labarère mentions the 50-plate reduction. Jean SENMARTIN's copies included 25 plates, one with a printed title (in the name of Lafon in Pau) and the other untitled, with the figures in the name of Dulon in Bagnères de Bigorre. There is no room for a title in the copy we offer, and the cardboard serves as the title; no publisher's name either. This album is also available in in-8 or even in-4 format as a normal album, not accordion-mounted, in which case the small plates are mounted individually. Do not confuse this collection of costumes with that of André Gorse, also anonymous. GORSE's collection has only 24 plates, the first of which depicts a woman from La Teste in Gironde. (See Labarère 1003 and 663-664)(Senmartin 147).
