Maroquin with the coat of arms of the Duke of Richelieu [NOGUES (Marie Germain)] La Coutume de Barège conférée avec les Usages, ou Coutume non-écrite du Pays du Lavedan, de la Ville de Lourde, de la Baronnie des Angles, Marquisat de Bénac, et autres endroits dépendants de la Province de Bigorre ; où l'on fait connoître le véritable esprit & le sens de ces Coutumes, soit en rapprochement leurs propres dispositions les unes des autres, soit en indiquant la manière dont elles sont interprétées dans l'usage ; et Où l'on trouvera traitées un grand nombre de Questions, auxquelles ces Coutumes peuvent donner lieu. by Me M.G.N***. Toulouse, Desclassan, (1760). In-8: 2f. 16pp. 482pp. Copy with full margins. Contemporary red morocco, ornate ribbed spine, bronze title-piece, central coat of arms with wide gilt lace surround, gilt roulette on edges and inside, gilt edges. A very fine copy. An "Explanation" of this custom, by the same NOGUÈS, appeared in 1789, and "Éclaircissemens sur la question" was published by Vignancour without date. Often in poor condition, here very well preserved (Labarère 1104). Provenance: A copy bearing the arms of Louis François Armand de Vignerot du Plessis de Richelieu (1696-1788), great-grand-nephew of Cardinal de Richelieu and godson of Louis XIV and the Duchess of Burgundy, academician, peer de France, former colonel of the Richelieu Regiment and diplomat, French gentleman and soldier on the boards, and printed bookplate of Antoine Casenave ( 1763-1818), French politician, envoy to the National Convention during the King's trial, member of the Council of Five Hundred, who was notably responsible, jointly with Cabanis, for drafting the Constitution of An VIII. This copy belonged to the library of Maurice Cazenave, grandson of Antoine de Cazenave, deputy during the Revolution and French ambassador to St. Petersburg.
