Copy from the library of Henri Beraldi RUSSELL-KILLOUGH (Henry Patrice Marie) Count Notes par voies et chemins dans le nouveau monde. Bagnères de Bigorre, Dossun, 1858. Booklet in-12: 73pp. Corrections in Henry Russell's hand. ½ lemon morocco signed AFFOLTER, gilt title on spine, gilt head. Extremely rare booklet of Russell's early travels and first publication. Second known copy and only one complete with title page. Quebec, Niagara Falls, Chicago, Lake Superior, Detroit, New York, Washington, Cincinati, Louisiana, Havana. Numerous observations on Indians, Yankees and "mosquitos". On the outward voyage, he distinguished himself: "by the second day, the biggest hearts had succumbed and the tables remained deserted: it was, however, an excellent fortune for the survivors: for where does one stop at sea, when one is not ill? I don't know, because my essentially carnivorous nature, which knows no bounds, cannot serve as a rule. The stewards who swirled around me were frozen with horror at such absorption". Provenance: Henri Beraldi's copy in its iconic lemon morocco binding.
