Rare Henri Beraldi copy on large paper - Lot 589
Rare Henri Beraldi copy on large paper
TAINE (Hippolyte Adolphe)
Voyage aux Pyrénées. Third edition illustrated by Gustave DORÉ. Paris, Hachette & Cie, 1860.
In-8: VI, 554 pp (the last in error 354), 1f; numerous illustrations in the text, including 48 full-page woodcuts. Very rare large paper edition (only 4 copies currently listed).
Lemon jansenist morocco lined with green morocco signed NOULHAC, gilt title on spine, filleted edges, gilt fillet inside lining, double endpapers, the first in embroidered silk, gilt edges. A very fine copy.
The best of the editions in terms of both format and illustrations, with the text enlarged compared to the first two. Of the 350 vignettes illustrating this work, 285 are first editions. The observations date from August 1854, and the first publication from April 1855. That same year, 1855, he set off again for the Pyrenees, and in 1856, visited new regions. He thus completed his work, lightening it with various quotations and borrowings, and published a new edition in 1858 under the definitive title of "Voyage aux Pyrénées".
Provenance: Copy of Henri Beraldi ("Ex-libris Henri Beraldi" in gilded letters on the reverse of the first cover). Copy not listed in Henri Beraldi's Pyrenean library (Catalogue de la bibliothèque Henri Beraldi, cinquième partie (Paris 1935), page 138, n°360).
