"The First Tale of the First Ascent to the First Peak of the - Lot 593
"The First Tale of the First Ascent to the First Peak of the Pyrenees". TCHIHATCHEFF (Platon Aleksandrovitch TCHIKHACHEV or) Ascent to Néthou (1842). Bagnères de Bigorre, Société Ramond, 1924." Les Cahiers Pyrénéistes II". Small in-8: 60pp; one folding table. Edition of 320 copies, one of the top 20 on Lafuma (no. 9). Autograph letter from Le Bondidier to René Bosviel. ½ brown filleted chagrin with corners, ornate ribbed spine, publisher's buff cover preserved, gilt head. A good copy. First volume edition of the first ascent of the highest peak in the Pyrenees, made in July 1842 in the company of Albert de FRANQUEVILLE. Second volume in the collection "Les Cahiers Pyrénéistes" Preface by Louis LE BONDIDIER. TCHIHATCHEFF's memoir was published as an extract on August 28 in the "Journal de Toulouse", and in full in October 1842 in "L'Institut, journal des Sciences et des Sociétés Savantes...". FRANQUEVILLE did not publish his own version of the ascent until 1845. TCHIHATCHEFF can be considered a double winner, since he returned to the same summit without FRANQUEVILLE 4 days later, on July 24, 1842, via the classic Portillon and Nethou glacier route. These 2 figures join PARROT on the Maladetta massif honour roll (Labarère 1576).
